PCB Panelization and Depaneling: A Complete Technical Guide

Do you produce and design tiny, irregularly shaped, and flexible printed circuit boards (PCBs)? Have you experienced higher unit costs, difficulties in the production process, and inefficiencies in surface mount technology (SMT) assembly lines? The above problems are typical in modern electronics production processes and assemblies nowadays.

"Panelização de PCB” refers to the industrial solution, wherein PCB board designs are grouped together in a larger fabricated panel, commonly referred to as an “array” or “pallet.” This guide provides a description of the technology of PCB panelization and its related process, depaneling. The steps and examples in this guide will illustrate how to minimize costs per unit, enhance production rates, improve stability in the processo de montagem, and facilitate the handling process by proper design and separation techniques of the panelized PCBs.

This article covers the definition and benefits of panelization, details the primary PCB panelization methods, outlines critical design rules and best practices, and explains the subsequent depaneling processes required to separate individual boards.

What is PCB Panelization?

Panelização de PCB
Painel PCB
PCB panelization is a manufacturing process wherein a number of separate PCBs are produced collectively in the form of a large panel. The master panel is processed in terms of etching, drilling, laminating, applying máscara de solda, and performing the serigrafia print process cumulatively. The master panel is then processed through automated lines in the SMT and through-hole mounting process before the PCBs are separated into their individual units. The PCBs in the master panel could be similar in design and functionality or of a different design pattern.

The Importance and Benefits of PCB Panelization

PCB panelization is more than a convenient tool: it is an essential process for cost-effective and reliable produção de grande volume.

  • Eficiência de custos: Maximizes the use of standard-sized raw laminate, reduces waste scrap, also known as cutil, at the fabricator.
  • Manufacturing Efficiency: Fabricators and assemblers work with a panel that holds several boards instead of working with several units. This drastically reduces machine setup, loading/unloading, and handling time per board.
  • Assembly Stability: The converyorized solder paste and component installation lines in an Processo SMT don’t accommodate narrow and thin PCBs, while flexible printed circuit boards will experience stability problems in an assembly environment. A panel offers the rigidity needed in the automated processing steps of paste application, colocação de componentese soldadura por reflow.
  • Simplified Logistics: For the testing, packaging, and shipping process, it is easier to work with panels than a number of disconnected, individual boards.

Métodos comuns de Panelização

The manner in which individual boards in the panel are linked to each other determines the process involved in depaneling the board. The three basic methods involved in board interlinkages are discussed in the following comparison, followed by a detailed description of each process:

MethodDescriçãoIdeal ForSeparation Method
V-Scoring (V-Grooving)V-shaped grooves are cut partially through the panel from top and bottom, leaving a thin web of material.Rectangular or square boards. Allows for high-density panelization.Breaking (manual or machine), specialized V-cut shears.
Tab Routing (Mouse Bites)Individual boards are connected by small, perforated tabs. The board outline is milled (routed) except at these tab locations.Irregular shapes, complex outlines, or boards with components near the edge.Depaneling router, laser cutting, or manual break along perforations.
Breakaway RailsBoards are separated by routed channels and attached to a solid, continuous frame (rails) on the panel’s perimeter via tabs.Heavy boards, assemblies requiring extra support, or when specific handling edges are needed.Routing the tabs connecting boards to the rails.

V-Scoring (V-Grooving)

This process requires the creation of V-grooves along the lines where the panel will be separated using machining from the top and the bottom of the panel. The grooves are made a precise depth to create a thin web of the laminate to be separated, and this web ranges in thickness to the value of one-third to one-half of the thickness of the core panel thickness. The groove angle is usually standardized to 30 degrees, 45 degrees, and 60 degrees. The process gives the highest density because the spacing of the boards, in this case, the width, has to be a minimum of 0.4 mm. The process has a limitation where the panel has to be separated along a straight line. The remaining web must be strong enough to survive assembly but weak enough for clean depaneling.

Tab Routing (Mouse Bites)

Tab routing, known for “mouse bite” holes, is designed to handle complex or irregular board shapes. The board edges are completely routed (milled) by a CNC router except where “tabs” are to be created to attach the board to the panel or frame by leaving the board material intact. The tabs are made fragile by a pattern of holes (mouse bites) for easier breakage. The width of the tabs ranges from 0.5 mm to 1.5 mm. The routing allows much variation in board shape and allows componentes to be packed closer to the board edges because the routing path can be programmed to go around the components. The panel space is higher than in V-scoring because of the diameter of the router bit.

Breakaway Rails

Within this arrangement, each board is isolated from the other through routed channels but is still connected to a robust basic peripheral frame referred to as breakaway rails. The boards are linked to the frame through a number of tabs. The mechanical rigidity associated with this construction makes it ideal for the processing of large boards, large components, or flexible circuits packaged in a rigid carrier board because the board assemblies are strongly coupled to the frame through the tabs, thus requiring a de-panel router/ laser to separate the boards from the frame through the tabs to produce individual boards, with the frame removed and discarded. This method simplifies handling in automated lines but uses more panel area for the frame.

11 Fundamental Rules in PCB Panelization

  8. Stress: Minimize mechanical and thermal stress with methods like laser cutting, especially for componentes sensíveis.

Common PCB Panelization Errors and How to Avoid

  1. Applying V-Scoring to Irregular Outlines: Scoring irregular paths for the separation of the lines will produce delicate corners upon depaneling. Solução: Design the irregularly shaped Pacote IC with tab routing.
  2. Improper Tab Design: The tab design that has too little width and mouse bites will break when processed in an SMT environment, and a design that is too stout will produce copper tearing in the depaneling process. Solução: Adhere to recommended widths and mouse bites in accordance with the fabricator’s recommendations (such as a maximum tab width of “0.040”).
  3. Insufficient Edge Clearance: Parking components, test points, and/or fine vestígios too close to the board edges and the separation path will be damaged by the stresses of depaneling. Solução: Provide a component-free zone according to the constraints of the components and depaneling process.
  4. Removing Fiducials from Rails: The absence of fiducials prevents the proper alignment of the panel by the SMT machine to place components correctly. Solução: At least three global fiducials should be present on the break-away rails.
  5. Design Without Respect to Depaneling: The panelization process determines the depaneling process, and a design meant to be laser depaneled cannot contain solid copper-filled areas in the routing process. Solução: Take the entire process into consideration at the early design phase.

O que é a separação de painéis de uma placa de circuito impresso (PCB Depaneling)?

PCB depaneling (or singulation) refers to the process of breaking the populated PCBs off from the fabricated master panel. The process is the compulsory next step in the panelization process. The process to be adopted should be free from stresses in terms of components and the board substrate in order to avoid cracks, solder joint failures, and delamination.

Primary PCB Depaneling Methods

The panelization design dictates the viable depaneling options. Each method offers distinct advantages and limitations.

V-Score Breaking

This standardized process for the separation of V-scored panels involves the application of a controlled bending force along the score to break the web of material left. This can be done manually for low-volume prototypes, but for production, a V-cut breaker is used. This equipment supports the panel on both sides of the score and exerts controlled pressure to effect a clean break with little stress involved. The equipment is fast and economical, but ideal for straight-line-separated panels and results in slight burrs.

Depaneling Router (Pizza Cutter)

The depaneling router employs the spinning milling bit commonly referred to as the “pizza cutter” to remove the tabs/channels in the routed panel. The panel is positioned on the X-Y table according to a predetermined path corresponding to the board shape in a tab routing process. The process is quite flexible to handle any form of board shape according to the tab routing process and results in the generation of fiberglass dust and moderate board vibration while the size of the routing bit restricts the corner angle in the board routing process conducted through the depaneling router process.

Despanelização a laser

The process involves the use of a high-powered CO2 laser and/or a UV laser to remove (vaporize) the substrate along the cutting line. The process is non-contact and stress-free and does not exert any mechanical pressure upon the board, making it suitable for assemblies containing delicate components such as BGAs and ceramic capacitors, and complex shapes. The process is also excellent for creating a clean seam free of char when using a UV laser source. The disadvantages are high costs and low rates.

Punching (Die Cutting)

This is a high-volume process where the custom steel rule die corresponds to the board size. The board is positioned underneath the steel rule die and removed in one pass to produce all the boards at the same time. This process has the shortest depaneling time for higher volume production and produces edges with a high degree of uniformity. Though the start-up cost per die is high, a new die is needed if any changes are made to design. It is best suited for simple shapes and very long production runs of a single design.

Guillotine/Saw Cutting

The Linear Cut Processes utilize a straight blade to cut the panel along a line to separate the rows of boards from a bigger group. The circular saw, a table saw, is capable of performing a straight cut to process large and thick sections such as metal-tracking PCBs. All the above processes are quite rough and produce a substantial amount of dust and burrs. Moreover, the process is only performed where other processes cannot be applied, not for precision assemblies.

Manual Breaking

If The most basic solution, involving hand-breaking panels along lines formed by routing tabs through perforations, or V-grooving. Involves no capital equipment but tends to be highly unrepeatable, and has a tendency to damage the boards and components through flexure and twisting. It is the only solution if there is a need to produce a low-volume prototyping board if nothing else is available.

PCB Depaneling Process

O PCB depaneling process involves a number of steps, which are carried out systematically to ensure accuracy and safeness. Panels are mostly designed with pre-assigned separation points such as V-grooves, tab routes, and perforations. After assembly, the PCB is transported to a depaneling station, where it is aligned by human operators and machinery. Depending on the materials used, density, and rate of production, the technique to apply is determined by considerations. The following are the key stages of the PCB depaneling process:

  1. Panel Design and Preparation: The process begins at the CAD stage, where panel layout and separation method (V-score, tab-route) are defined. After assembly, the populated panel is prepared for depaneling.
  2. Fixturing and Alignment: The PCB panel is fixed to the depaneling tool. Alignment is very important, and it is more so when the routing and laser process is adopted.
  3. Separation Execution: The chosen depaneling process is implemented, which could include a break sequence, punching cycle, routing procedure, and laser cutting process. While routing, dust extraction is also utilized.
  4. Deburring/Edge Cleaning (If Required): Depending on the process, such as tab-routing, minor burrs or raised areas may occur. In some applications where smoothly finished edges are called for, secondary deburring can be included.
  5. Inspection and Unloading: Individual boards are inspected on the basis of their edge integrity, freedom from cracks and delamination, and any indication of damage due to the depaneling process. Boards meeting acceptable standards are unloaded for further testing and packaging.

This process minimizes stress on components and maintains board quality, which is essential for high-reliability applications in aerospace, automóvel, and consumer electronics.

Conclusão

PCB panelization and depaneling are two intrinsically linked stages of efficient electronics manufacturing. Panelization is the design and assembly-phase strategy for grouping boards to optimize fabrication and assembly cost, throughput, and stability. Depaneling is the post-assembly, separation-phase execution that must be carefully selected to match the panel design, preserving the quality of the finished product. A successful manufacturing outcome depends on considering both stages as a single integrated process during the PCB design phase.

FAQs about PCB Panelization & PCB Depaneling

Yes, this is called a “multi-product panel” or “array.” It is an effective way to prototype several designs simultaneously, but it requires careful layout to balance copper density and may complicate assembly if different solder pastes are needed.
Panelization significantly reduces per-board cost by sharing common fabrication steps (e.g., imaging, etching) across multiple units and minimizing material waste. The cost savings typically far outweigh the minimal added cost of the panelization process itself.
Choose V-scoring for simple rectangular boards where maximizing panel density is critical and depaneling stress is manageable. Choose tab routing for irregular shapes, boards with components near the edge, or when a depaneling router or laser will be used for a cleaner, lower-stress separation.
For assembled boards, yes. Some very large or thick boards may be fabricated individually, but the vast majority of SMT-assembled boards are panelized and subsequently depaneled.
Laser depaneling is generally considered the best method for assemblies with sensitive components, as it applies virtually no mechanical stress or vibration to the board, eliminating the risk of hidden solder joint cracks.
