Software Protel per la progettazione di PCB: Panoramica, caratteristiche e processo di progettazione
What is Protel PCB?
Protel PCB is one of the important PCB design software developed to help an engineer effectively design, analyze, and manufacture circuit boards. It offers a set of tools for schematic capture, layout design, and signal integrity analysis.
History of Protel PCB
Protel PCB was born in 1985 to design Printed Circuit Boards with DOS-based operating systems and thus started its work in the electronic design industry. During the 1990s, key versions were released, such as Protel 98 and Protel 99, with new features in schematic capture and enhanced routing. Thus, in 2001, one of the most popular software was Protel 99 SE, which increased the speed and efficiency of PCB design.
In 2005, Protel PCB rebranded as Altium Designer and brought in new modifications like 3D visualization of PCB and many other advanced design tools, so that it could keep up with the ever-evolving industry requirements. Today, Protel PCB, under the name Altium, is one of the shapers of modern PCB design software.

Pros and Cons of Protel PCB
Pro
- Friendly Interface: The Protel has an easy, friendly interface; therefore, both the inexperienced and the experienced designers find it accessible.
- Rich set of design tools: Schematic capture, PCB layout, and simulation are provided in one integrated tool, making the whole design process smooth.
- Good Routing Capabilities: Protel has both manual and automatic routing capabilities, which help designers in optimizing trace layouts for maximum performance.
- Multilayer PCB Support: This allows the user to make complex designs and supports the creation of high-density, multilayer boards that most modern electronic devices require.
- Strong Community Support: Having a big community of users in which resources, tutorials, and forums can guide or help people through the revision process and show the best improvements for their prototypes.
Contro
- Outdated Compared to Modern Tools: Development of this software has totally stopped, whereas more modern options come with numerous better features:
- Limited 3D Visualization: In contrast to Altium Designer today, Protel doesn’t have complete 3D visualization of your design at real scale to see minute details.
- Higher Learning Curve: Software is not intuitively accessible for completely inexperienced users who have never designed any PCBs before.
- Not Actively Maintained: Protel has now grown into Altium. It is no longer updated for more features to add on and hence has certain limitations in meeting the modern-day design requirements.

Design Guidelines in Protel PCB
- Component Placement Strategies: Correct placement decreases the interference, and routing becomes easy. Group similar functional components together, place high-speed parts near, and don’t place temperature-sensitive components next to heat-producing components.
- Optimization of Routing: The trace lengths are to be minimized, and the 90-degree bends should be tried to be avoided for reducing the loss and reflection of a signal. While auto-routing is very helpful, it may be necessary to make manual adjustments to some routes.
- Ground Plane Considerations: A solid ground plane minimizes noise and improves signal integrity. Make sure that there are no gaps in the ground plane, which will invite interference and make EMI higher.
- Power Distribution: Use wide traces for high-current components. Place decoupling capacitors near power pins to ensure there is stable voltage and no fluctuation, thus increasing overall circuit efficiency.
