Présentation complète du système de test AOI pour PCB

In precision electronics production, literally zero tolerance exists. One error in solder joint or placement mistake of components on a PCBA board can lead to product failure, costly recall, and irreversible damage to a brand. To mitigate these negative consequences, rigorous testing protocols have to be implemented end-to-end in the entire PCBA process, like the use of automated optical inspection (AOI). AOI is a crucial PCB test method that enables us to discover defects in PCBAs and get them into conformity.

As a B2B business committed to high-quality products, Technologie FS is committed to supplying defect-free PCBA assembly. This book contains detailed knowledge on AOI technology, its application, principles, benefits, and the central position it occupies in current PCB quality inspection. The figure below shows two Inspection AOI systems used by FS Technology’s production facility.

What is AOI Inspection?

Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI) is an automated, high-speed visual inspection method that is used to find defects and quality faults on assembled PCBAs and printed circuit boards (PCBs). It uses high-resolution cameras, powerful image processing software, and sophisticated lighting systems to capture high-quality images of a board and compare them to an ideal standard or golden board.

Par rapport à human inspection, a subjective as well as tiring process, AOI testing provides objective, consistent, and measurable outcomes. As a non-contact test, it lacks the risk of damaging sensitive parts and is imperative in verifying the quality of Montage SMT et Montage THT processes.

How Does an AOI Machine Work?

The magic of Inspection AOI lies in its blend of hardware and intelligent software. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the operational workflow:

1. Programming & Golden Board Creation

The initial step involves programming the AOI system. A “known-good” board (the “golden board”) is fed through the machine. The system makes high-quality pictures of this board from multiple angles with different lighting arrangements (e.g., coaxial, side, and angle lighting) to highlight different features like solder joints, components, and sérigraphie. All these pictures are employed for developing the master reference database.

2. Image Acquisition & Scanning

The unit under test (UUT) is moved into the AOI machine. As it moves, one or several high-speed, high-resolution cameras scan the board. More complex systems utilize several cameras and lighting setups to capture a total set of 2D and, in a few cases, 3D images, addressing every side of the assembly.

3. Image Processing & Enhancement

Raw images are processed with high-performance algorithms. Contrast is improved, noise is eliminated, and features are sharpened to clearly define the regions of interest—component bodies, leads, and solder joints—to assist in their proper analysis.

4. Algorithmic Comparison & Analysis

This is the core of the Inspection AOI process. The processed image of the UUT is compared algorithmically with the golden board reference using complex algorithms. There are two general methods:

  • Template Matching: Compares the whole image with the reference.

  • Rule-Based Algorithms: Checks for individual parameters like component presence, polarity, value (by reading markings using OCR – Optical Character Recognition), and solder quality by analyzing shape, volume, and reflectivity.

5. Defect Flagging & Reporting

The first deviation beyond programmed tolerance levels flags the potential defect immediately. The board is typically marked (e.g., with an inkless dot) or kicked out to a repair station. The AOI machine also generates a complex report with images of the defect, its location (XY coordinates), and its classification, worth of process improvement.

Where is AOI Used in the PCBA Process?

AOI testing isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” procedure performed only at the end. Its position at strategic points is the key to its success:

  • Post-Solder Paste Inspection (SPI): Some lines use AOI to verify solder paste depositing before placement des composants.

  • Post-Pick and Place: To validate component existence, value, and orientation before reflow, so that soldering will not be done in incorrect parts.

  • Post-Reflow (Most Common): This is the important check point. It inspects for defects in solder bridges, tombstoning, misalignment, and missing components following the reflow oven.

  • Post-Wave Soldering: Used for inspection of through-hole connections and bottom side of boards.

  • Final Assembly: Final inspection after completion of all manufacturing stages.

AOI vs. Other PCB Testing Methods: A Comparative Analysis

Test MethodHow it WorksPourConsMeilleur pour
AOIOptical imaging & comparisonFast, non-contact, catches visual & solder defects.Cannot test electrical functionality.Process control & visual defect detection.
Test en circuit (ICT)Electrical probes test nodes.Excellent for functionality, continuity, and measuring values.Requires fixture, high upfront cost, not for visual defects.Electrical verification and fault diagnosis.
Sonde volanteMoving probes test nodes. No fixture needed, great for prototypes.Slower than ICT, not for grand volume.Low-volume production and prototyping.
X-Ray Inspection (AXI)Penetrates layers with X-rays.Sees hidden joints (BGA, QFN).Expensive, slower, requires safety measures.Inspecting hidden solder joints and voids.

Au Technologie FS, we typically recommend a combined approach. AOI is perfect for early process verification and visual fault detection, while TIC ou Sonde volante ensures electrical functionality. This multi-pronged attack gives you the highest possible test coverage.

Common PCB Defects Detected by AOI Systems

Inspection AOI is highly effectibe in identifying a wide variety of manufacturing defects, including:

  • Solder Defects: Solder bridges (shorts), insufficient solder, excess solder, solder balls, and cold solder joints.

  • Component Defects: Missing components, misoriented/misaligned components, wrong component values, lifted leads (tombstoning), and component damage.

  • Assembly Defects: Presence of foreign material or contamination.

  • Polarity Defects: Diodes, capacitors, or ICs installed in the incorrect polarity.
