How to Choose Between SMT and THT
Why SMT Matters: The Key Benefits
- Miniaturisation is one of the obvious advantages of SMT. SMD can be as small as one-tenth of the mass of through-hole parts. Such miniaturisation has enabled the development of smartphones, wearable electronics, and other small gadgets that have become an indispensable part of modern life.
- Performance enhancement is the other major advantage of SMT. Since shorter electrical pathways result from SMT, there will be fewer parasitics, thus enabling circuits to function at much higher speeds with less signal integrity loss.
- Cost effectiveness arises due to automation.
