The Ultimate Guide to PCBA Conformal Coating: Types, Selection & Process Optimization

Introdução

A revestimento isolante is one of the critical protection layers involved in the Printed Circuit Board Assembly process. It can be considered a barrier that shields circuit conductors and other electronic components from harmful environmental factors. Being exposed to humidity, dust, chemicals, and high temperatures can stimulate contamination, the development of dendrites, corrosion, and eventually falha do circuito. Use of conformal coating increases the reliability and safety of electronic devices.

This thin-film polymer firmly bonds with the irregular surface features of the PCBA. This results in environmental protection, along with increased dielectric strength, insulation, and mechanical integrity.

6 Types of Conformal Coatings

The first, and most fundamental, process in determining coating choice is the identification of the material requirements. All types of material offer a different combination of characteristics, cost, and usability.
Tipos de revestimento conformacional
  1. Acrylic Coatings (AR)

Acrylic Resin (AR) coatings are preferred because of their convenience of use and economic viability. AR coatings have excellent resistance to moisture, excellent insulation properties, and fast drying time. One of the main advantages of AR coatings is that they are easy to rework and can easily be stripped off by any solvent. However, their resistance to harsh chemicals and solvents, as well as their usable temperature range, leaves much to be desired. AR coatings are, therefore, suited for general use, eletrónica de consumoe household appliances.
  1. Polyurethane Coatings (UR)

Polyurethane (UR) coatings demonstrate excellent resistance properties to chemicals, solvents, abrasion, and moisture. These types of coatings create a tough, hard film withstanding demanding environments. However, the negative aspect, or rather the complicated aspect, of using polyurethane coatings is that their removal, especially during rework, becomes more complicated. Polyurethane coatings are highly recommended for eletrônica automotiva, industrial control, and marine environments, especially in environments where fuel, oil, or corrosives might be present.
  1. Silicone Coatings (SR)

Silicone Resin (SR) coatings are superior for aplicações de alta temperatura with superior flexibility and resistance to temperatures over a wide range. They have superior resistance to moisture and humidity. The soft, elastic film with a rubber-like texture is useful for parts with high temperature cycles and mechanical loading. The major disadvantages are increased cost, possibility of surface contamination, and the difficulty of removing the material. The use of Silicone is common in the automotive under-the-hood segment, Aerospace componentes electrónicose Power LEDs.
  1. Epoxy Coatings (ER)

Epoxy Resin (ER) coatings offer a hard, rigid, and durable barrier with excellent water resistance and good dielectric strength. However, the hard and rigid material makes it brittle and fracture-sensitive when subjected to either thermal or bending stresses. Reworking is extremely difficult. Epoxies are generally applied in heavy-section devices, transformers, or capacitors, where the likelihood of reworking is low.
  1. Parylene Coatings (XY)

Parylene (XY) is a special polymer that can be vapor deposited in a vacuum environment to produce a pinhole-free coating of specified thickness that can extend underneath parts. However, high cost, lack of versatility for coating specified areas only, difficulty of removal, and absence of suitability for high-technology applications could be considered as limitations. Nevertheless, this technique is currently being used in high-technology applications for militar, biomedical, and space-related hardware.
  1. Fluoropolymer Coatings

Fluoropolymers have the best chemical and high-temperature resistance. Fluoropolymers are highly resistant to various aggressive chemicals and acids, as well as having a very low friction coefficient. Just like Parylene films, fluoropolymers are costly and have a complicated deposition process. Their applications are primarily in chemical processing sensors, high-temperature equipment, and preparing non-stick surfaces.

5 Steps Guide you How to Choose the Right Conformal Coating

  1. Define the Environment: Identify the primary threats: Humidity/Moisture (all protect, but Parylene/UR/SR excel), Chemical Exposure (UR, Epoxy, Fluoropolymer), Extreme Temperatures (SR, Parylene), Mechanical Abrasion (UR, Epoxy), or Fungal Growth (requires specific fungicidal testing).

  1. Evaluate the electrical and physical requirements: Perhaps high dielectric strength, insulation resistance, or flexibility under mechanical stress is a concern. High-frequency designs may require a low dielectric-constant paint.

  1. Evaluate Rework & Repair Likelihood: Where rework and/or repairs are expected in the field, the reworkable coatings (e.g., Acrylic) will be prioritized. Where a “fit and forget” approach will be used, a more permanent coating (e.g., Epoxy, Parylene).

  1. Factor in Production & Cost Considerations: Select the coating and corresponding application process (spray, dip, selective). Compare the benefits of Parylene or Fluoropolymers with the higher prices they command for processing. Sometimes, the right balance between performance and price is offered by Acrylic coatings.

  1. Requirements for Compliance Checks: Verify that the chosen coating is compliant with industry requirements (IPC-CC-830B for generic electronics use, UL 94 V-0 for flame retardancy, or industry requirements for automotive and medical applications).

Conformal Coatings Application Methods

Coating process technique has a significant effect on the quality, uniformity, and economy of the application. Coating process techniques include:

Brush Coating

A manual process with a brush. It is quite simple and inexpensive. It is appropriate for produção de baixo volume or rework where the deposition has to be accurate and localized. The disadvantages are the variation in the deposition thickness, the presence of bubbles or streaks, and low speed.

Revestimento por pulverização

The coating is applied through a spray gun and aerosol process. It can be manually or automatically operated. It facilitates quicker application compared to brush coating. The technique is suitable when performing medium to high production volumes. Handling overspray in the spraying process and protecting sensitive sections are some of the disadvantages of this type of coating.

Selective Coating

This is an automated process whereby the coating is applied only to specified areas of the board, using robots. Its advantages include high accuracy, no masking needed, and waste reduction. It is most useful for complex boards that have high components or areas with no need for applying the coating. However, the set-up cost is higher.

Curtain Coating

A liquid flow coating process coats the boards with a constant flow of liquid coating. This method achieves high uniformity of film thickness at high speeds, although it is less suited for complex 3D substrates with high vertical features that might interfere with the liquid flow curtain.

Revestimento por imersão

In the PCBA immersion process, the board assembly is completely submerged in the coating bath and withdrawn at a controlled speed. The immersion method offers full coverage with little chance for omission in areas around components. However, potential problems relate to pooling at the bottom corners of the PCBA, heavy masking on connectors, and drag-out.

Vacuum Deposition (Parylene Coating)

A non-liquid process whereby the dimer form of parylene is vaporized and polymerized in a vacuum environment directly on the surface of substrates. This process is very expensive and is generally done at a third-party facility and not on the assembly line. It results in a pinhole-free deposit.

How to Apply Conformal Coating to PCBAs

Conformal Coating Standards & Certifications

IPC-CC-830B / MIL-I-46058C

Pele escamosa

conformal coating failure - scaly skin

conformal coating failure - Bubbled Surface
  1. Pressão excessiva do revestimento introduzindo ar no líquido.
  2. Secagem rápida que impede o fluxo correto e a desgaseificação.

  • Controlo das condições de secagem: Manage temperature, humidity, and airflow to ensure adequate drying time for each layer, reducing the risk of foaming and promoting a smooth surface.
