Our PCB DFM Service Process
We work methodically to make sure that your design can be manufactured, is reliable, and that it is the least expensive among the alternatives.
Initial Consultation & Review
We discuss your project goals, application environment, volume, and budget. Our engineers ask the right questions to understand your product's intended use and lifecycle.
Comprehensive DFM Analysis (Based on Our PCB DFM Checklist)
Using the latest DFM software and a combination of their decades of experience, our experts analyze your Gerber files and design data. We do more than just rule check your files by scrutinizing every aspect listed in our trusted PCB DFM checklist:
- Design & Layout – Trace widths, spacing, via placement, component orientation, and fiducial marks.
- Materials & Process – Recommend optimal substrate, copper weight, and surface finish based on your application.
- Assembly Feasibility – Make sure your design is compatible with both SMT and THT process for high soldering quality.
- Test Coverage – Check test point accessibility to ensure that testing can be performed in-circuit or functionally successfully.
Detailed Report & Optimization Recommendations
You'll get a straightforward, easy-to-implement DFM report. In the report, issues are segregated based on severity levels (Critical, Recommended, Optimization). Explanatory notes, impact assessments, and the guiding solutions are also covered for every problem.
🔍 In our report, a typical observation looks like this:
"Acid Trap Risk: We saw acute-angle traces (less than 90°) that might hold etchant during etching, This way leading to over-etching and open circuits. Recommendation: Make the corner angle 135° or add a chamfer."
"Edge Clearance Violation: Copper on the inner layers is so close to the board edge that the protective coating might peel off during routing, thereby making copper prone to corrosion. Recommendation: Increase clearance to 0.015" on inner layers and 0.010" on outer layers."
Design Modification & Re-verification
If you are struggling with designing changes, our engineers may step in and help or give you some clear instructions on how to modify. Besides changes, we do complementary re-verifications to confirm that all the problems are sorted out.
Seamless Production Handoff
Having gone through the DFM validation, your design will be sent to our PCBA production line without any delay. This guarantees first pass yield, timely delivery, and no compromise in quality.
Why Partner with FS TECH for Your DFM Needs?
Expert Engineering Team
Our experienced engineers not only produce the circuit boards, but also come up with their designs. We know and can explain the subtle coordination between the functions and when a PCB is ready for manufacturing, which is one of the deciding factors in the success of Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA).
Supply Chain Strength
We capitalize on our well-developed network of material suppliers. Our DFM service includes suggestions based on the materials in our inventory, which helps you get cheaper prices and shorter lead times.
One-Stop Solution
We can take care of everything for you, be it the DFM review, prototype assembly, or mass production. Because of this, we are your one and only partner that you can hold responsible. Besides In reality this removes communication gaps, it also speeds up the time-to-market for your product.
Industry Certifications
“Whether your project requires ISO13485 for medical devices or IATF16949 for automotive, our certified processes and rigorous testing (including AOI, X-Ray, and Functional Testing) guarantee compliance and reliability.”
Common PCB Design Flaws We Can Fix

Acid Trap (Sharp Trace Corners)
Acid can concentrate in sharp trace corners (<90°) and cause over-etching or breaking of the circuits. We either change such corners to ≥135° (obtuse) or we also add chamfers to get rid of the traps.

Insufficient Edge Clearance
Copper close to the PCB edge will be exposed to routing and could get corroded or lead to shorts. As a rule, we add 0.010" (outer) / 0.015" (inner) clearance.

Missing Fiducial Marks
Automated pick-and-place machines require fiducials for accurate alignment. We add them to ensure high-speed, precise assembly and reduce placement errors.
FAQs about PCB DFM
DFM is an engineering technique that incorporates design rules, geometrical constraints, and materials considerations into the design process, such that the fabrication data package falls within the process capability window of the selected fabricator. DFM works solely in the context of bare board manufacture.
DRC (Design Rule Check): Verification of design rule constraints using EDA software.
DFM (Design for Manufacturing) : Constraints involved in bare board manufacturing processes.
DFA (Design for Assembly) : Constraints in placing components and soldering.
These three stages are applied sequentially and address distinct aspects of product realization.
DFM Review will occur after the routing process is completed and before the creation of final Gerbers. The earlier the DFM process is integrated into the design process—the better, as modifications become increasingly costly further down the line.
Benefits of DFM include cost efficiency (avoidance of customized tools and human labor), yield improvement (optimization of process capability metrics), and reliability guarantee (increased resistance to thermal cycles, mechanical stress, and electrochemical migration).
IPC-2221 (clearances and materials), IPC-2152 (current carrying capability), IPC-6012 (rigid printed board qualification), IPC-7351 (land pattern guidelines for DFA), IPC-J-STD-001 (solderability rules), and IPC-A-610 (assembly acceptability criteria) are among those commonly used standards.
Commercial software packages such as Valor, Mentor Graphics, and Altium’s integrated DFM features automate rule violation detection by comparing design geometry against manufacturer-derived rule sets, providing prioritized optimization recommendations.
DFM reduces costs by eliminating specialized tooling and non-standard materials, minimizing non-recurring engineering charges, reducing material waste, decreasing labor requirements, and improving first-pass yields.
Yes. Prototypes incorporating DFM principles yield functionally representative samples and transition more smoothly to production without requiring design revisions, whereas prototypes violating DFM rules may produce misleading results and generate unnecessary rework.
